CVSA Conference 2014 Focuses on Safety, Emerging Technologies

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) annual conference kicks off in Buffalo this coming Sunday, running until Wednesday the 17th. The focus is on safety, with participants expected to discuss how all commercial players—from truckers to shippers and legislators—can make the road a safer place.

new cvsa logoThe CVSA is an international not-for-profit organization made up of industry representatives and local, state, provincial, territorial, and federal motor carrier safety officials from across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The CVSA describes its mission as promoting commercial motor vehicle safety by providing leadership guidance to everyone involved in the commercial transportation industry.

This year’s event includes a number of panels featuring important players in the transportation industry. For example, a Monday morning panel will include presentations by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Deputy Administrator Bill Bronrott and Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) chairman Darren E. Christle.

Setting this year’s CVSA conference apart from previous events will be extensive discussion of “Intelligent Transportation Systems Technology”, including technologies like emergency vehicle notification systems (which can alert emergency responders if an accident has occurred) and collision avoidance systems (which alert a driver if their action might result in an accident).

Emerging technology will also be a big focus for exhibitors attending the CVSA conference. One major area of interest involves electronic log apps, which can be used to spot and prevent log violations. It’s a new idea that promises to keep everyone, including drivers, shippers, and brokers, clear and honest with each other. It can also save transportation companies money and help drivers and shippers make better decisions when it comes to hours of service issues.

Keeping up with rapidly changing technology is just one reason the CVSA is encouraging those involved in the commercial transportation industry to attend the Buffalo conference. “The benefits of the face-to-face interaction are priceless,” the CVSA notes on its official website. “Participants get down to business, discuss, examine, cooperate and make tremendous strides in furthering CVSA’s mission.”
