Questions & Answers

Q. Was the two-year extension given for EOBRs?
The “Grandfather Clause” under section 395.15 of the FMCSA’s ELD Mandate Final Rule, applies to AOBRDs, or automatic onboard recording devices. What that means is that if you install an AOBRD and use it before the ELD mandate deadline of December 18, 2017, you will be able to continue to use it as such until December 16, 2019, at which time you will need to be using a fully-compliant ELD. To learn more about the differences between AOBRDs and ELDs, check out this blog post.  BigRoad’s DashLink can be installed and used as an AOBRD until the extension deadline of December 16, 2019. When you are ready to make the move to a more restrictive ELD, it can be done with a simple software update. There is no need for new hardware!

Q. Is there going to be a 24 hour help line for drivers if they are having an issue with the BigRoad Web App?
A. Yes! BigRoad support is available 24/7 to support our users with any issues they might have with a BigRoad product. BigRoad Support can be reached at 1-888-305-8777 x1.

Q. Are there handheld devices that can be used instead of dashboard devices?
A. The ELD mandate specifies that in order to be compliant, ELDs must be integrally synchronized to the engine of the truck, meaning that mobile logbook apps alone are not enough to be compliant. The BigRoad Mobile App connects via Bluetooth to the DashLink, which is a plug-and-play, engine connected device. Together they are an ELD-mandate compliant solution. The great thing about DashLink is that because it is plug-and-play, it can be installed by you in minutes – there is no need for expensive installation or a permanent vehicle change. And if you change trucks, the device is easily transferable!

Q. I’m just starting my company and I just have one truck. Do I have to have an ELD in my truck?
A.There is no exemption based on the size of your operation, so owner-operators and independent drivers are not exempt. However, you might qualify for one of the other exemptions we outlined in the webinar. Here is a link to a blog post that outlined exemptions to the ELD mandate.

Q. How are ELDs linked to the vehicle?
A. Some ELDs are hardwired to the engine of the vehicle. Our DashLink ELD is plug-and-play solution that plugs in to the ECM of your vehicle and connects via Bluetooth to the BigRoad Mobile App on a mobile phone or tablet to create logs.
