Questions & Answers

Q. Do livestock haulers qualify for an ELD exemption?
A. Livestock haulers are not exempt from running an ELD. Only the following drivers qualify for an ELD exemption:

  • Drivers who are not required to keep RODS
  • Drivers who keep RODS for less than 8 days in a given 30 day period
  • Drivers who are a part of a driveaway-towaway operation
  • Drivers who drive a vehicle manufactured before 2000
  • Short haul drivers who drive within a 100 air-mile of their home office

If you do not qualify for one of these exemptions, you will need an ELD by the mandate deadline, even if you haul livestock.

Q. What is the cost per month? What is the cost of set-up?
A.
There are no upfront costs for hardware or set-up fees with BigRoad. With BigRoad that cost per month is $25 for a single driver/single asset, or $15 per user per month and $10 per DashLink ELD per month.

Q. We ‘slip seat’ some runs, which means we can have up to 5 different drivers in one trip on same truck?
A.
BigRoad’s ELD solution can easily accommodate slip seating. Our plug-and-play DashLink ELD is interchangeable between drivers and trucks. Just plug DashLink into the vehicle’s ECM and connect to it via a BlueTooth with the BigRoad Mobile App. Your drivers can use DashLink to track their hours-of-service. When they’re done driving, they can disconnect from the device and the next driver will be able to connect to the it through our BigRoad Mobile App without missing a mile.

Q. Who is on the ‘approved vendor’ list?
A. The FMCSA list of registered ELDs is a list of electronic logging devices that have been self-certified by the manufacturer. These devices have not been vetted by the FMCSA to ensure that they will be compliant. Be sure to ask vendors some of the questions covered in this webinar to determine if their product will be compliant by the mandate deadline. Also, to see which manufacturers are on the list, click here

We are in the process of completing our self-certification process and will be on the list in the coming month. Stayed to the BigRoad Blog, subscribe to our emails, and watch our social media channels for an announcement in the coming weeks.

Q. If a class B driver uses a company vehicle that is a class C vehicle (sedan) does that vehicle need to have an ELD?
A. If your drivers need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to operate the vehicle, they will need an electronic logging device to record to their RODs after the mandate deadline: December 18, 2017.

Q. Does the 8 days in 30 days exemption apply to passenger carrier drivers/limo drivers?
A.  ELD exemptions apply to all the drivers that qualify regardless of the industry or motor carrier. Therefore, passenger carrier drivers that keep RODS for 8 days or less in a rolling 30 day period would qualify for an ELD exemption

Q. Does Bigroad require drivers to complete a DVIR before they can drive?
A. BigRoad does not require drivers to complete a DVIR (pre-trip inspection) before they can drive as they are not required to do this by the FMCSA. Although, we highly recommend that your drivers complete one to ensure that the vehicle is in good working order before they start their day.

However, a post-trip inspection is required according to section 396.11. Post-trip DVIRs can be completed within the BigRoad Mobile App.
